Zeba's life is shattered when her husband is found brutally murdered. Zeba is arrested and jailed. With the fate of Zeba's life in his hands, Afghan-born, American-raised Yusuf discovers that, like Afghanistan itself, his client may not be at all what he imagines. A moving look at the lives of modern Afghan women, this is astonishing, frightening, and triumphant. From the author of the bestselling "The Pearl That Broke Its Shell." Print run 50,000.

A House Without Windows submitted by camieroper on August 7, 2019, 6:16pm An author keeps her reader guessing through 7/8 of a book who the murderer is, so you know she's good. This lengthy novel (414 pp.), is worth the read. About mothers and children, husbands and wives, and the legal system in Afghanistan, it highlights the lack of women's rights. Family is the only sphere where many of them have a say. Zeba won't testify on her own behalf, or even tell what happened to her husband in the courtyard of their home. But the words of her lawyer, her family, a journalist, village members, all strive to defend her. The depictions of a woman's prison are appalling, but even more so are the insubstantial patriarchal and cultural reasons for their imprisonment, shining light on the state of women's rights in the Afghani culture. This is a thought-provoking book, and quite interesting.
