Young English Detective Solves the Crime submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 13, 2013, 11:24pm Part of a series of mystery novels for young readers, "The Weed that Strings the Hangman's Bag" features 11-year-old genius Flavia de Luce who lives in the fictional English town of Bishop's Lacey with her father and two older sisters. Flavia is a self-taught chemist who is always solving crimes for the police, who do not appreciate her intervention.

In this book, Flavia solves the hanging death of a very young boy, so the story is rather disturbing and some readers may chose to skip this one.

As it is set in the 1950s, the Flavia de Luce novels show the prejudices of the time period and place, including against a German former POW and against women in general. Some readers may find the characters' reactions to then-new technology, such as television, interesting.

Flavia deLuce submitted by 21621030304990 on August 27, 2014, 3:30pm Wonderful detective series for young and older readers alike. 11 year old Flavia de Luce is entwined in a series of crimes including but not limited to murder. This well written story takes you through her thought process and what she finds herself sharing with the authorities surprises them and herself as well.

Delightful character submitted by Cloverdale on July 10, 2016, 5:21pm Engaging 11 yr old chemist detective in rural England, post WWII.

This is the second book in the series, but I missed the first (I'll go back). That said, I wasn't confused by reading them out of order.

Spunky character submitted by teri on August 7, 2019, 11:26pm Flavia's character is fun, endearing, precocious, and smart. She solves crimes by thinking her way through them, and, if the odd chemical is needed to help prove her out - she has her own laboratory.
A nice read for young people.
