Surprise Pun! submitted by Meginator on July 28, 2018, 11:58am This book is a cute, straightforward story of a boy trying a range of potential instruments before finding the one that he is interested in playing. I enjoyed the descriptors of the various other instruments, but I felt that the chosen instrument (hint: the number 88 was chosen for a reason) was placed as being immediately and obviously superior, without much of an exploration as to why the boy selected it. This seems a bit unfair to the other instruments and to readers who have different (and totally legitimate) preferences.
So-so submitted by FordAlpha on August 30, 2019, 9:39pm The biggest draw here is probably the illustrations, which have a lively, expressive style and a nice level of detail for kids. The musical instruments are rendered lovingly. The story concept is good, but the realization is only so-so, as the text lacks the musicality that it ought to evoke, and the resolution feels sort of abrupt and arbitrary.
It's good submitted by downing on August 6, 2022, 2:04pm but it didn't really resonate with me. not a favorite.
