Not as good as Marion Zimmer Bradley
submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on June 21, 2022, 1:16pm
To fan of Marion Zimmer Bradley's books about Celtic Paganism, including "The Mists of Avalon," this book will come as a disappointment. While Diana L. Paxson tries to capture the magic and mysticism of the other author's novels, she largely fails to capture the reader's attention.
This novel begins with the destruction of Atlantis whose refugees end up founding Avalon, the sacred site in Britain... at least according to Paxson. The trope comes across as inauthentic and too much of a stretch, particularly as compared to Zimmer Bradley's portrayal of Celtic Paganism as natural and indigenous.
