When Ben, a suburban family man, takes a business trip to rural Pennsylvania, he decides to spend the afternoon before his dinner meeting on a short hike. Once he sets out into the woods behind his hotel, he quickly comes to realize that the path he has chosen cannot be given up easily. With no choice but to move forward, Ben finds himself falling deeper and deeper into a world of man-eating giants, bizarre demons, and colossal insects.

weird, fun, moving submitted by apknapp on August 16, 2020, 6:35pm Couldn't decide if the whole thing was an allegory about living with clinical depression (unimaginable horrors lurking around every corner--no matter how well things seem to be going, it can all go sideways at any moment, with no warning). Either way, crazyweird story, and a fun read. Trying to figure out whether the depicted events were really happening--and if not, what they meant--added another layer of interest to a very entertaining plot. Somehow I didn't have much trouble with the surrealism, which is the kind of thing that usually ticks me off; I think the protagonist's reactions to everything were what saved the story. He's just so...me. Average, accessible, believable, irreverent, confused, terrified, frustrated. Every emotion he had was exactly right and portrayed in a casual style that maximized the impact--the writing really stayed out of the way. I would recommend this for anyone who doesn't mind a bit of fantasy, but I think those who don't consider themselves readers might find it especially gratifying; a fun story without having to 'work' for it.
