Translated from Spanish.
"Yuri Herrera does not simply write about the border between Mexico and the United States and those who cross it. He explores the crossings and translations people make in their minds and language as they move from one country to another, especially when there's no going back. Traversing this lonely territory is Makina, a young woman who knows only too well how to survive in a violent, macho world. Leaving behind her life in Mexico to search for her brother, she is smuggled into the US carrying a pair of secret messages--one from her mother and one from the Mexican underworld"--Publisher's description.

A story about crossing over from Mexico submitted by sfrantom on July 22, 2018, 4:48pm So poignant in so few pages! This book addresses a wide range of deep topics, in a blend of imagery and truth. The tale of "crossing over" the border from Mexico to the U.S. is told in a way that defies the stereotypical news headlines and humanizes it with various characters along the way. Told from the sister's perspective, we see she is a fantastically smart and resourceful young woman against many odds. Immigration has many layers, and this tale on the topic is beautifully translated.
Very moving submitted by booksandhibernation on February 26, 2024, 1:43pm A brilliant story, written hauntingly. Exactly the kind of novels that need wider attention not just for the themes they cover, but also the artfulness of language in translation.
