Headstrong girls unite submitted by marshd on September 1, 2010, 6:25pm This is a great book for younger girls who are tomboyish or independent. Our heroine, Princess Cimorene, is a stubborn and entertaining character, who isn't going to be rescued by any silly prince. She's more interested in magic and fencing than embroidery and etiquette. And she's a great protagonist for girls who think that always doing what is "proper" is ridiculous.

Remember your handkerchief submitted by neapnspring on June 17, 2013, 10:36pm If you are looking for a series with a strong heroine with magic, many cats and dragons and wizards, your search is over. It's a perfect story for anyone tired of the Disney princess who waits around to get rescued. My mother read this out loud to us when I was in middle school, and I still re-read it from time to time.

Childhood Favorite! submitted by Sunny29 on July 15, 2014, 10:24am The "Dragon Series" by Patricia C. Wrede was a childhood favorite of mine that I just revisited this past winter. Wrede combines well known fairy tales and puts a new-age, witty twist to the characters. A quick page turner for adults and hilarious adventure for youth readers, this is a great find!

Not a proper princess :) submitted by Bookbird on August 2, 2014, 11:38am Wrede takes the usual formats for fairy tales (such as princesses usually being captured by dragons) and creates a world where such behavior is actually acceptable with a proper way to do it. Cimorene refuses to be 'proper', volunteers to be a dragon's princess, and ends up preventing wizards from carrying out their nasty plans. I think that this book is a fairly light read and very enjoyable for all ages, being very refreshing for those who are tired of the age-old patterns princesses usually follow :)

"proper" princessing submitted by mtrax on August 6, 2014, 3:22pm I love a good story where the princess actually does something, and it's an interesting twist that the wizards are bad (whereas the main witch is good).

great book submitted by naturej1girl on July 7, 2015, 1:25pm I love the whole series the books make me laugh

A different fairy tale submitted by mrajraspn08 on August 13, 2016, 9:54am A fantastic book for headstrong, powerful girls. More than that, it also has some interesting ideas that will make you think differently.

Great Read Aloud submitted by oochomogo on July 18, 2019, 1:19pm I'm reading this series to my 6 year old son and he is eating it up. I love the strong female characters and exciting story.

love love love submitted by Princess Cimorene on July 21, 2020, 1:35am I can't emphasize enough how much I love this book. I took my username from it years ago because Cimorene was my favorite childhood hero! I am delighted by the playfulness, the stubbornness, the resourcefulness, the empowerment...so much to love about both the characters and the book as a whole.

Great series submitted by laurenk5 on August 29, 2020, 11:00pm Amazing series. Takes a lot of fantasy tropes and turns them on their heads, but in a way that is interesting and makes sense and isn't just to be edgy. Very funny book.

All right: 3/5 submitted by graytabby on August 1, 2021, 10:30pm I had to read this for Battle of the Books last summer, but I'm glad I did. It's a good book, but there are some flaws. IMHO, someone needs to tell Patricia C Wrede that obstacles are supposed to hinder the character, not just serve as minor details tucked into the corners of the book. But still, read it.

Great read-aloud submitted by kristen.ochomogo on August 3, 2023, 9:41am This has been a fun read-aloud for my family. I love sharing books that I enjoyed when I was younger and this one has held up decently. The first chapter or two are little slow for young kids, but if you can push through, they really enjoy it. I still love Cimorene and her refusal to fit in the princess box.
