Against the background of the sea, the author presents a group of characters from childhood to old age who speak in soliloquy, and we see them as they appear to themselves and to each other. In the end one of the characters sums up the effect of their lives as a whole.

Woolf's Best Work of Fiction submitted by smeelay on August 18, 2016, 2:30pm I could read this book again and again. I'm a huge Woolf fan and this is by far my favorite of her fiction. It reads like a beautiful poem.

Wonderful, but difficult submitted by woolf.stan on June 30, 2022, 9:20pm This is Woolf's most poetic novel -- in fact, it's like one giant poem! It's so dense, but worth reading if you can manage it

Beautifully Written submitted by APluss on July 11, 2023, 9:15pm Not my favorite of her books, but it's definitely her most poetic and lush.
