"Virginia Woolf's exuberant 'biography' tells the story of the cross-dressing, sex-changing Orlando who begins life as a young noble in the sixteenth century and moves through numerous historical and geographical worlds to finish as a modern woman writer in the 1920s. The book is in part a happy tribute to the 'life' that her love for Vita Sackville-West had breathed into Virginia Woolf's own day-to-day existence; it is also Woolf's light-hearted and light-handed teasing out of the assumptions that lie behind the normal conventions for writing about a fictional or historical life. In this novel, Virginia Woolf plays loose and fast: Orlando uncovers a literary and sexual revolution overnight."--Jacket.

Four Stars submitted by Avliss on June 24, 2018, 4:40pm I’m gonna be honest - it was a bit of a rough start for me. The writing is pretty dense, and I had a tough time keeping myself on track for the first hundred or so pages.

However, I persisted, and I’m so glad I did. Orlando is a fascinating novel, especially with its exploration of gender and sexuality! It seems to push for the reader to realise that things are rarely as black-and-white (or binary) as we would like - gender is an obvious example, but the novel also explores our concept of history and time, as well as the act of writing itself.

Orlando : : a Biography submitted by LilQuinn on June 25, 2019, 6:35pm While famous for its exploration of gender, I personally find Orlando more interesting as a depiction of life, change, and psychology. I highly recommend it.

Beautiful submitted by SaraP on July 8, 2020, 6:47am Less narrative experimentation than her other more famous books like To the Light House and Mrs. Dalloway, but a beautiful discussion of gender and sexuality. It's also a really interesting look at the last 400 years (300 from when it was written).
