COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Cage Fright! submitted by FordAlpha on June 27, 2018, 10:30pm I read a lot of Bill Peet books growing up, and I enjoy reading them to my kids now--although I confess that their length often exceeds my read-aloud energy. Concise they are not. "Randy's Dandy Lions" is one of Peet's quicker reads, since it's written in rhyme, which constrains his tendency to wordiness. It was perhaps my favorite Peet book when I was a kid, and it's one of my kids' favorites now. Randy, a circus lion tamer, is fired because his timid lions won't perform on stage. But the new lion tamer's harsh methods traumatize the lions so badly that they roar all night, exhausting the whole circus. With Randy re-installed as lion tamer, the lions overcome their cage fright and bring down the house with their acrobatic stunts. The big-top circus setting (which the author used often) is outdated now, with its train-car cages, captive elephants, and whip-wielding trainers. Still, it's an appealing story with a message of kindness. Bill Peet was a Disney animation artist, and his colored-pencil illustrations are always excellent, particularly the lions' expressions, which range from terrified to ecstatic.
