A heartbreaking work submitted by shermdock on August 25, 2016, 9:55pm If you have any doubt that the world can be a foreboding place and sometimes the way love conquers all is through death, this novel will confirm it. Make it to the end without tears and I will give you $5.

bleak ending, yet... submitted by camelsamba on August 11, 2022, 11:25pm "But in a civilized country you could never tell" (who are the watchers)

This might be my favorite Le Carré book, although I'm not exactly sure why. The ending is dismal and bleak - I almost didn't want to read the last chapter because I sensed the outcome - but overall the storyline was more interesting and easier to follow than some of his other books I've read recently (the post- Cold War ones, that is). I like how we were led along step-by-step, as Justin figures out what Tessa had figured out before him.
