"One of science fiction's premiere humorists turns her eagle eye to the crushing societal implications of telepathy. In a not-too-distant future, a simple outpatient procedure that has been promised to increase empathy between romantic partners has become all the rage. So when Briddey Flannigan's fiancé proposes that he and Briddey undergo the procedure, she is delighted! Only...the results aren't quite as expected. Instead of gaining an increased empathetic link with her fiancé Briddey finds herself hearing the actual thoughts of one of the nerdiest techs in her office. And that's the least of her problems"-- Provided by publisher.

accurate and annoying submitted by apknapp on August 16, 2020, 6:06pm The story was all about how we're inundating ourselves with communication, leaving ourselves open to a relentless flow of information, constantly bombarded. Smartphones, social media, email, texts--we're always "in-pocket", expected to be available to anyone, at any time. Willis illustrates this in the first several pages by showing how hard the protagonist has to work to keep a secret from her meddlesome family and gossipy coworkers. Smartphones, social media, email, texts--we're always "in-pocket", expected to be available to anyone, at any time. Willis illustrates this in the first several pages by showing how hard the protagonist has to work to keep a secret from her meddlesome family and gossipy coworkers. Honestly, I wanted to put the book down and never pick it up again--I think the depiction of how the character is harassed at every moment from every quarter was supposed to be humorously exasperating, but I just found it EXHAUSTING. And THEN she develops telepathy and can hear everyone, all the time, so that's a whole new level of awful. Interesting social commentary and fun characters, as always, but not my favorite read from Willis. The constant demands for attention were so disruptive that I actually had trouble keeping the thread--which was probably the whole point, but also annoying. But I did really like the two leads and the whole concept, especially the part about the library being a safe haven from the deluge.
