The Coming of Age Story That Should be Read
submitted by derantho on July 13, 2019, 7:33pm
Too often the Catcher in the Rye is paraded out as the coming of age story for the whiners and cynics. Or if you think things are just going to work out, you might read David Copperfield. And then of course there is a multitude of novels that cover the same ground but under extraordinary circumstances. Of Human Bondage is none of these.
Reading this book feels so incredibly modern despite its age. The common pitfalls of growing up and living are examined and explained so simply and economically that you'd swear it was just god laying down the facts. I defy anyone to get through this book and not have at least a few moments that you completely identify with. The only thing you could even remotely say is sensational about the book is it's European setting. It is a very grounded book.
This book is referenced in The Catcher in the Rye, it was a noted mainstay on Hemingway's shelf, and the author's name served as the namesake of Morgan Freeman's character in Seven (the screenwriter is a fan of W. Somerset Maugham).
