Never Got There submitted by subeth on July 8, 2012, 7:31pm I waded through this book, caught up in its very excellent narrative voice. I found the plot predictable and disappointing.

Good but not great submitted by klickitat on August 6, 2012, 9:01am A book like this -- a sprawling, time-lapse narrative -- is hard to pull off successfully but, overall, I think Groff does. The manic-pixie-dream-girl character (Helle) that the protagonist (Bit) pines after never felt fully realized to me and so the section of the book (relatively small) that concerns her wasn't as moving as I think Groff intended it to be. The allusions to 9/11 fell similarly short of the mark but that just might be my own perspective of oversaturation. In ten or twenty years, I'm sure the 9/11 musings will read differently.

I wonder if the let-down and unraveling of the last century's idealism will become more common as a novel topic. It's certainly potent.

I'd be tempted to pair this book with A Visit From the Goon Squad as a read-alike but that might just be because Egan's was the last book I read before Arcadia.
