Work around the Bleak and Somber... submitted by Kikumatsu97 on July 27, 2015, 11:14am These illustrations are really cool and a new and interesting concept, although not at all detailed, which is how I prefer children's book illustrations to be. The fact that they are boldly black and white pays honest tribute to the darkness of this story. That's what it is though. I get that this seems like a children's story, but I think the modern and modified version of it is made much more appropriate for young listeners. I had to leave out some of the words, literally. I needed to skirt around some parts that were pretty much unnecessarily grim. I also felt an urgent need to return this book right away before it became damaged. In a house full of kids, laser cut pages and matte cardstock are easy to destroy. Might recommend the library cover the binding with laminate, or put it in teen graphics? A true telling of the original writings. A little too true.
