"In this spirited sequel to the acclaimed The Rook, Myfanwy Thomas returns to clinch an alliance between deadly rivals and avert epic -- and slimy -- supernatural war. When secret organizations are forced to merge after years of enmity and bloodshed, only one person has the fearsome powers--and the bureaucratic finesse--to get the job done. Facing her greatest challenge yet, Rook Myfanwy Thomas must broker a deal between two bitter adversaries: The Checquy--the centuries-old covert British organization that protects society from supernatural threats, and ... The Grafters--a centuries-old supernatural threat. But as bizarre attacks sweep London, threatening to sabotage negotiations, old hatreds flare. Surrounded by spies, only the Rook and two women who absolutely hate each other, can seek out the culprits before they trigger a devastating otherworldly war. Stiletto is a novel of preternatural diplomacy, paranoia, and snide remarks, from an author who "adroitly straddles the thin line between fantasy, thriller, and spoof " (Booklist)"-- Provided by publisher.

Worth the Wait submitted by Meginator on June 23, 2017, 11:38pm It took a while for Daniel O'Malley to finish the sequel to his addictively awesome "The Rook," but "Stiletto" is well worth the wait. I appreciated that O'Malley resisted the temptation to focus on the same primary characters as in the first book; they appear here, with some subtle nods to previous events, but their presence sets the scene rather than driving the action. The events of the first book have consequences that percolate through this book, but I think it can stand alone as well. In-world historical context is important, but readers can understand the gist of it without having read "The Rook." I, however, do not recommend this because "The Rook" is so wonderfully good. "Stiletto" has a lot to live up to and, somewhat surprisingly, does! It (crucially) has the same sense of humor and the same joyous spirit that drove its predecessor and is just as fun. I cannot wait to see what's next for the Checquy and their allies (and enemies).

A rare sequel that is better than the first submitted by kuz_a on July 16, 2018, 5:02pm I wasn't a huge fan of "The Rook", the first installment of this series, but in my estimation, by adding more points of view and expanding much more upon the world he built in the first one, the book finds it's stride. And it's stride turns out to be a a fast-paced storyline featuring a pretty kick ass ensemble of interesting protagonists, who could actually pass the bechdel test to boot!
