Okay submitted by zidrissu on August 20, 2013, 4:08pm I wouldn't recommend anyone reading it if they don't like violence and if they are not 14 and up. It's really violent at some point and sad. It's basically about a boy who refuses to fund raise for his school and is tormented to no end. Because trustworthy adults are never involved his refusal has some unfortunate consequences. This book really gets you to understand standing your ground, bullying, and the word STUBBORN.
Love it. submitted by lec.dank on June 17, 2016, 3:20pm A book about how cruel the universe can be. Has brilliant quotes, and Cormier has a very interesting (in a good way) writing style. As he said in an interview, this book is truly a metaphor for life.
one of my favorites as a teen submitted by nemiller on July 31, 2021, 1:57pm This was one of my favorite books when I was 14. I'd recommend it if you liked A Separate Piece or Speak, or generally like reading serious, old-fashioned YA books.
The Chocolate War submitted by SBNB on June 24, 2022, 8:04pm I read the book this afternoon. I don't regret reading it. But I'm not glad I read it either. I often prefer fiction that allows me to escape from reality into another life. This book screams reality in your face at every turn, like a flashing neon sign in the dead of night advertising that the world sucks. Sociopaths and bullies and no hope. Don't get me wrong, it is excellently written and is an excellent story. But oh so harsh.
