What to grow submitted by ssands on August 18, 2018, 8:39pm This book, by the author of the classic "Square Foot Gardening," is about how to choose which vegetables to grow by calculating what the vegetable costs in the grocery store vs. what it costs to grow it. An example would be baking potatoes, which can be extremely cheap in the store: is it really worth the trouble of growing them at home? Fresh herbs, on the other hand, can be very expensive at the store, but practically grow themselves. It seems like a good idea, but really, I feel like I've already incorporated those observation in my decisions about what to plant, even though I have not formalized it this way. Also, the calculations can't be perfectly precise as prices will vary from year to year, so I think my general feelings about value are probably good enough.
