Very accessible submitted by yugure on May 12, 2013, 11:49am While the audience for this book seems to be very young writers (meaning middle school and high school), I found it was a very well done guide to writing. Quite accessible with fun writing exercises and good examples of each of the topics Levine writes about.
very good submitted by LatitudeB on August 9, 2015, 3:51pm Writing Magic is so wonderful--I think it's right up there with Stephen King's On Writing: A memoir of the Craft, which was so helpful to my own writing. I tore through every page of Writing Magic, and I don't think anyone should let the fact that it was written by a YA author or FOR that particular audience stop you from reading it to help your own writing immediately! Gail Carson Levine gives great, usable advice and has filled each chapter with exercises to improve your craft. Like all of her other fiction, it's a well-written, page-turner! Thank you Ms. Levine, for a true gem of a book!
Motivating and practical submitted by Princess Cimorene on July 19, 2020, 9:58pm I grew up reading Gail Carson Levine's stories, and as an adult I find this guide to writing both helpful and illuminating--like getting a glimpse into the way those stories I loved were built. The advice is very to-the-point and really emphasizes that the only way to improve is to actually write. The constant prompts to stop and write or yourself are very effective.
