A prescient look at Modern Christianity
submitted by OfaValley on July 3, 2023, 10:52am
I am no Christian, but I wanted to learn more about the religion and faith and this book was recommended to me. The book presents modern American Christianity as being in the middle of a paradigm shift between Traditional conservative Christianity and Emerging progressive Christianity, with a look at why the Traditional Christians are losing popularity amongst the youth.
Written in 2003, a lot of the same things still apply to this day. Borg sides with the Emerging progressive view and shows the reader how approaching the bible in a metaphorical way, rather than a literal inerrant is a valid (not better) way of being a Christian which allows for a more open-minded approach.
If you're a Christian I'm sure the internal messages will speak strongly to you, as an atheist, I am just fascinated by how certain things are viewed and I understand a bit more about why people choose to believe and certain Christian phrases make more sense now when viewed metaphorically.
