Hidden gem submitted by ark on July 25, 2013, 3:19pm I was recommended this series (Dresden Files) by a friend and finally got around to this book, the first in the series. It was awesome and super addicting! The main character, Harry, is hilarious and loveable, and the combination of dry detective-novel wit and the magical, well-thought out fantastical plot lines makes for a unique and highly entertaining series. My only gripe is the slightly chauvinistic treatment of women characters in the series (either sexy and villainous or cute and in need of saving...).
Love the series

The first of a long series about a wizard/detective, this is well told from his first person perspective. Great blends of self-awareness and "I don't want to think about that part of myself," gritty and occasionally funny. A neat world of current reality if magic was real but mostly unknown.
I'm glad we've got #2-4 in the house already.
great submitted by KOH on August 28, 2017, 8:28pm My husband really liked this one.
Looks like a great series! submitted by pamhockey25 on July 29, 2021, 11:13am A friend recommended this series to me and I really enjoyed the first book. Harry is a wizard--he advertises his PI and wizarding skills in the phone book, and also works with the Chicago police department. This book sets up some relationships that look promising. Originally written in 2000, some things are a little dated. Overall, I'm looking forward to getting into this series!
Fun, Some Parts to Get Past
submitted by ckperrin on June 13, 2022, 11:27pm
My dad recommended this series to me, a series he loves. It really does a good job of nailing the classic "noir detective" character, but also in a more modern setting. It's fun, and really explores magic, with detailed references to different mythologies. The magic is powerful, but has many limitations which help move the plot along nicely. Harry is a great character, often too down on himself but really relatable as someone just trying to make their way in the world, even with magic powers.
I think my main complaint is the treatment of many of the female characters. Harry calls himself a gentleman (and he is), but Murphy often calls him a chauvinist pig, and she is fairly right too. A number of female characters get reduced a bit to sexual objects at times, and it is magnified through the character's "virgin" point of view. But Murphey is a nice opposite to these other female characters, as the head of special cases section of the police, and the one who works with Harry the most. My understanding (as my dad reassured me) is that this objectification gets toned down quite a bit as the series goes on and Jim Butcher gets settled into the series.
Overall if you are interested in mystery, detective novels, or magic, then this is the series for you!
first in the series submitted by 16macleod_ian on June 19, 2023, 7:20pm A witty fantasy-mystery series set in somewhat modern-day USA. Warning, it starts out lighthearted but gets to be a pretty heavy story. The later books become increasingly complex storyline, only pick this up if you are willing to read through them all in short order of each other. One of my favorite series of all time,
