An Awesome Book! submitted by j.carbon06 on June 20, 2011, 6:10pm This book takes place in Fantasyland. The continent is poor and desolate, because evil Mr. Chesney (a man from our world) has virtually enslaved all of Fantasyland’s inhabitants. They are forced to work on tours, offered by Mr. Chesney to rich people from our world. Wizard Derk is a kind wizard who lives in the countryside with his family. He likes to experiment with plants and animals until he is assigned the roll of Dark Lord on a tour. Can Derk deal with the challenges of being a Dark Lord and at the same time, destroy the tyranny of Mr. Chesney? I like this book because it’s funny and pokes fun at traditional fantasies but still has a serious plot and great character. Reading it will make you want to read the sequel, which I thought was even better. Frequent readers of fantasy will love this book.

Really Good submitted by kathscot on August 29, 2012, 7:37pm The book is exciting and funny at the same time. And it's really cool that humans and griffins are in the same family.

Funny submitted by audreyh on June 13, 2015, 12:16pm I think this is probably my favorite book written by Diana Wynne Jones. It's both funny and inspiring. I've revisited this book as an adult and found that it stands up to time, and is a delightful read.
