COMMUNITY REVIEWS

"Enthusiastic" - Possessed by the divine submitted by larkspur on August 22, 2007, 7:05am Coelho's _Witch_ astonished and possessed me. I read the book in about two sittings, both the same day. Then I asked my husband whether people "have missions," and thought for a very long time about the conversation. _The Witch_ had an effect on my comparable to few other books. It made me want to accomplish something spiritually for the world. Its themes and meditations are excellently developed.

The story leaves in the end something to be desired. There is no true literary climax, and what climax there is is made hollow by the postscript. The reader must consider whether the titular heroine's final actions 'make sense' given her life thus far. (I have to admit the book ended up more "popular" in its construction -- after all, the jacket quotes compare Coelho to J.K. Rowling and John Grisham -- than my vanity over my taste would like.) But any novel which the reader "must consider" is doing something right -- and Coelho's _Witch_ does much right.
