"17 years ago: A girl in South Dakota falls through the earth, then wakes up dozens of feet below ground on the palm of what seems to be a giant metal hand. Today: She is a top-level physicist leading a team of people to understand exactly what that hand is, where it came from, and what it portends for humanity. A swift and spellbinding tale told almost exclusively through transcriptions of interviews conducted by a mysterious and unnamed character, this is a unique debut that describes a hunt for truth, power, and giant body parts"-- Provided by publisher.

A New Type of Science Fiction submitted by zixyxuan on June 20, 2017, 12:35pm I definitely thought this book was going to be more exciting than it ended up to be. The format of the writing was very creative, but there were portions of this novel when I felt like the story was very slow-paced for something that was conducted through interviews.

My major problems with this novel:
1. The powerful nameless individual conducting all the interviews. I was really indifferent towards him. I actually didn't think he was a good person until the last 50 pages or so when an even corrupt scientist is assigned head of the project.
2. I didn't particularly feel attached to any of the characters. It was like me watching someone watching a movie...which is just so boring.
3. The science. Being a Ph.D. student in chemical engineering, it is extremely frustrating to read "scientific logs" conducted by these world-class scientists that are so fake. Either cut back on the details to make more vague statements or really do the research.

Overall Rating: 3.25 Stars

Gundams + SciFi submitted by parlettes on June 17, 2018, 10:50am If you're (or were) a fan of Gundam, Pacific Rim or really just anything in the giant robot genre, this series is for probably for you.

Sleeping Giants and Neuvel's following novels are written in the form of interviews, press releases, and personal log enteries which allow readers to visual the unfolding situations and scenarios.

Not all of the characters are particularly likeable or relatable, but they aren't necessarily written to be. I did spend a good portion of the story trying to figure out the motivations of the unnamed character conducting the interviews, which was distracting from the actions of the other characters. And while some parts of the story do move slowly, other parts move quite quickly.

While the science is not enterirely accurate, it's entertaining enough to readers with a casual knowledge.

Overall, I enjoyed Sleeping Giants and the rest of the Themis Files as a relaxing read. It would make a pretty good scifi mini-series given the right audience and production budget.

Wanted to like this... submitted by eileen on July 20, 2019, 9:10pm I'm not generally interested in SciFi but this book came recommended to me. I ended up abandoning it about 1/3 of the way in, as the plot wasn't moving along in any satisfying direction. Some confusing stylistic writing with nameless characters also made it hard to keep going...

Great format submitted by ckay15 on July 28, 2021, 10:52am I'm almost done this trilogy and I recommend if it you like uncovering lore in video games through paper and audio logs like Fallout or Control (2019).
