mildly entertaining mediocrity submitted by eapearce on July 30, 2014, 2:16pm Before reading The One and Only, I had not read any of Emily Giffin's work. Having seen her books everywhere, and feeling in need of an easy "beach read," I placed this book on hold right away. Although it certainly wasn't terrible, I definitely felt disappointed during and after reading it. The story follows Shea, a 33-year-old, football-loving reporter who resides in Walker, Texas, the same town where she grew up and went to college. In Shea lies my biggest issue with the book: the fact that she seems to have NO flaws or struggles whatsoever. Feeling a little bored with her job, she applies for and immediately gets her dream job as the only female sports reporter in Dallas, reporting on her beloved alma mater. Also, she runs into the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys one day and he falls in love with her, starts buying her diamonds, and wines and dines her for months before she decides that she's actually in love with her best friend's dad (???). Various minor drama ensues, and I definitely wanted to read on until the end of the book to find out what ultimately happens, but everything seemed pretty predictable. Even many of the main story lines seemed to be lifted in a cliche manner from news stories of the past decade, so any surprises in the story were minor. Ultimately, I guess I wouldn't NOT recommend this book, but I feel that there is much better "chick lit" out there, and this one certainly won't stay in my memory for long.
One and Only submitted by hcf on August 30, 2014, 10:14pm Meh ~ this is so-so chick lit.
Ick submitted by sumsaylor on July 15, 2015, 8:21pm Unfortunately, this didn't quite work out for me. The romance in this book has a such an ick factor I couldn't enjoy it.
Not her best work submitted by Brownize on January 2, 2019, 2:24pm Couldn't get into the storyline at all, even when I saw it coming by the end of the second chapter. I finished reading it but felt like this one plot and book had no interesting qualities.
