Lacks an Emotional Core submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 9:33pm As promised, this book condenses the story of the classic film into the picture book format; that it is at all convincing is quite the feat indeed, although the book is not without its flaws. The exaggerated and cartoonish visual style of the illustrations suits the story perfectly, softening the story’s harder edges, playing up its humorous aspects, and remaining true to the original actors while providing a more lighthearted overall feeling. Unsurprisingly, this adaptation considerably tones down some of the film’s more violent moments, keeping slapstick traps like the ice and the feathers and eliminating the burns, the BB gun, the spider, and that horrifying nail (oddly, the paint cans, arguably one of Harry and Marv’s most traumatic injuries and one most likely to actually kill them, remain). Unfortunately, while the book does include the subplot about Kevin’s neighbor and his own reconciliation with his family, it completely ignores Kevin’s own emotional journey, which provides the heart underneath the original film’s humor. The plot beats are in place, but Kevin never seems truly lonely; without this sense of pathos, the story becomes shallow and doesn’t have any convincing sweetness to counteract its violence. The book is funny, but without the requisite emotional depth it leans a bit toward the mean-spirited side despite its fealty to the original film.
