Deeply important book
submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on July 21, 2018, 4:25pm
I think that the most relevant books to read about the history of race in the United States are those written by people who lived the experience. That makes _Black Like Me_ an interesting perspective... it was written by a White man who spends six weeks in the South as a Black man in the 1950's. We can learn some important things, because he has a unique perspective as someone who spends time in each world. On the other hand, he seems to think that he then genuinely understands what it means to be Black in the Jim Crow South... and I cannot possibly believe that this could be true.
Nevertheless, his experience and what happened when he shared it with the country was profound, and sheds yet one more light on a time in history that shaped who we are today. This book should be one necessary part of any full reading list, IMHO.
Absolutely a must read submitted by rsalles on July 12, 2023, 1:43pm This book was excellent. I would recommend anyone to read it, but especially white folks. It is hard to put down and incredibly thought provoking.
