A book that is particularly relevant in 2019 submitted by rea2mill on July 31, 2019, 12:04pm This is not going to be a comfortable read, but I think it’s a book that many people should be reading right now. We’ve forgotten what happened when Jewish immigrants were dehumanized before, during, and in the case of this story, after World War Two. We’ve forgotten that setting quotas on how many immigrants could enter our country resulted in the deaths of millions. We’ve forgotten how those who are fleeing terrible circumstances might not have the documents necessary to satisfy requirements for legal immigration. In forgetting we are now doing many of the exact same terrible things to immigrants at our own border, and we need the lessons in empathy that this book contains. The characters are rich and well written and the story is moving. Anita Diamante is a very gifted writer and I’m looking forward to picking up more of her books.
