Highly recommended submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 29, 2012, 11:02am A cute, adorable and fun story about an Australian marsupial, "Diary of a Wombat" is so funny that I gave a copy to my little sister, who also loves it. I often quote the book's cute lines, such as "Demanded carrots. Got carrots!" and "Decided humans make excellent pets."
So cute! submitted by Zekicmom on June 21, 2013, 8:02pm This is a very sweet book which says volumes with few words.
Charming! submitted by jackson.sarah.jean on February 19, 2016, 10:05pm Oh what a clever way to write a book! It is so simple but the reader is able to understand so much about the coming and goings of the wombat's life. Who knew, eating, sleeping, scratching, and digging a hole can be so funny and entertaining. My kids and I laughed. My seven year old son wanted to bring this book to bed with him and I let him (not something we do with library books). This is a book that's making the "stars" list!
Side-Splittingly Funny submitted by Meginator on June 22, 2023, 2:22pm This picture book tells the straightforward story of a wombat whose daily life is full of simple pleasures, even after a group of humans moves into the neighborhood. The simple prose and repetition make this a great choice for reading aloud and for readers who are just beginning to sound out words, with just enough story development to keep the book from getting stale and a mischievous, slightly ironic sense of humor throughout that culminates with a hilarious parting note. Though simple, the illustrations and layouts add a few moments of additional humor in addition to being charming (just look at the wombat sprawled out when they are obviously in deep sleep). Easy to read and revisit, this is a great choice for animal lovers and readers who appreciate the humor in viewing the familiar world from a slightly different perspective.
Carrots! submitted by FordAlpha on August 24, 2023, 9:56pm With domestic animals, the question of who's domesticated whom, or who is training or manipulating whom, attracts discussions both humorous and philosophical. "Diary of a Wombat" brings the same dynamic to a roguish (if sleepy) wild animal's interaction with human neighbors. The wombat is beyond cute, and its quest for more carrots drives the (sleepy) action to its droll conclusion. My kids loved this book! The sequels aren't as good -- they just press the same formula, straining a bit -- but this one deserves its modern-classic status.
