wonderful adoption memoir
submitted by 21621031390949 on August 12, 2016, 12:36pm
What a wonderful book! A story of a family's struggles with some of the hard parts of international adoption, the author is open and frank about her feelings, the events, and their ramifications. While focused on the particular issues connected with trans-racial and trans-cultural adoption, there is plenty in this book about family relationships in general, including ambivalence, anger, and joy. [very tiny spoiler alert for the following sentence, so read on past if you want everything to be new when you read it.] One of the very poignant parts for me was Mary's description of her feelings about her relationship with her mother, especially upon her death.
I began this book not expecting a lot. The Korals are my neighbors and I was reading because of that relationship. But soon this book became a page turner for me; I couldn't wait to sit down and read. I found myself wanting to know more, to follow the family along further. For me - I'm lucky - I can do that. And now I have an even greater appreciation for who they are. Well done, Mary!
