When Margaret's fiancé, John, is hospitalized for depression, she faces a choice: carry on with their plans, or back away from the suffering it may bring her. She decides to marry him. What follows is the unforgettable story of what unfolds from this act of love and faith. At the heart of it is their eldest son, Michael, a brilliant, anxious music fanatic, and the story of how, over the span of decades, his younger siblings-the responsible Celia and the tightly controlled Alec-struggle along with their mother to care for Michael's increasingly troubled existence.

Thoughtful, contemplative, sad, and intense submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 21, 2019, 10:23pm _Imagine Me Gone_ is a thoughtful, contemplative, sad, and intense book about mental illness (particularly depression) across two generations of a family. It doesn't try to hide the challenges, paint a happy ending, or otherwise declare that "love will save the day." It is one respectful deep dive into the love and challenges across time of a marriage that accepts depression as a reality, three children who are raised in that house, and those three children becoming adults themselves. The relationships between the parents, the parents and children, and between the siblings are well-rounded and complex, fully three-dimensional... and that's probably my favorite part of the book. I struggled to care about some of the characters, but I think that was actually *because* of the difficult content, and makes the point that the challenges of mental illness affect everyone, and change whole lives. Mental health issues are not contained in nice neat little boxes. This book is hard to read, yet still engaging, and very important. Recommended.

Fantastic book submitted by robynegg on July 15, 2023, 11:54pm Beautiful book on mental illness and family dynamics.
