Miles Vorkosigan
submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 23, 2013, 9:04pm
"The Warrior's Apprentice" is the first of a long and fabulous series about Lord Miles Vorkosigan, the heir of one of the most powerful aristocratic families of his planet. Due to a chemical attack while his mother was pregnant, Miles was born with brittle bones, resulting in a short stature and physical disability. This means that Miles can't get into the military, which is almost a requirement for aristocratic men, so he sets out on an adventure across the galaxy.
Miles is very smart and energetic, so he chafes at any restrictions placed upon him. He lives in a society with terrible prejudices against disabilities, especially those caused by genes (although Miles' disability is not).
The Vorkosigan series (I highly recommend reading all of them) also portrays gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) characters positively, which is significant for a series begun in 1986.
