The year is 1570, and in the convent of Santa Caterina, in the Italian city of Ferrara, noblewomen find space to pursue their lives under God's protection. But any community, however smoothly run, suffers tremors when it takes in someone by force. And the arrival of Santa Caterina's new novice sets in motion a chain of events that will shake the convent to its core.

A very unique story and setting. The characters drew me in. The central character, Faustina, is an educated woman who works as an herbalist, apothecary, and the convent's healer. It is interestingly demonstrated how she has more freedom within the convent to be a medical professional than she would in the larger world.
The arrival of a rebellious, disruptive, and clever new initiate causes all sorts of upset in the convent, and also brings some dangerous, closer scrutiny to bear on the more artistic and liberal liberties permitted within the convent walls.
