not your typical western submitted by grubbg on June 13, 2015, 12:35pm A Western genre novel of a different sort. This is a slow, patient novella that mimics the pace of the lives of the place and period. Denis Johnson's most mature novel. The main character's voice haunts the book and the painful losses that shaped his tough, hard-scrabble life in old Idaho. A beautiful book.
Outstanding novella submitted by MH17 on August 8, 2017, 3:17pm A masterpiece of compression, Train Dreams tells the life story of its main character in 120 pp through a series of episodes that operate well as stand-alone stories but amass to give readers the sense of a life. Vivid descriptions of place linger in my memory, and the way the supernatural haunts this work feels satisfying, not superfluous, implying that each life contains moments that cannot be explained, that exist outside of our natural laws. Johnson writes movingly about grief, work, loneliness and understands the bond between man and dog. A remarkable, enjoyable read.
