Fantastic submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on August 19, 2017, 11:39am Hands down one of the best parenting books I've ever read, for a wide variety of reasons:
It's organized. It's accessible. It's practical. It gives ideas and scripts and examples that make sense. It addresses both the all-the-time stuff (not cleaning her room) and current issues like phones/ technology and how pot is stronger today than it was in the '60's, and why that matters to a developing brain.

Damour identifies the journey from childhood to young adulthood as happening along seven strands: 1) parting with childhood, 2) joining a new tribe, 3) harnessing emotions, 4) contending with adult authority, 5) planning for the future, 6) entering the romantic world, and 7) caring for herself. She says that a girl's journey on each of these strands happens at its own pace, so that a girl might be charging ahead on planning for her future, while moving slowly on parting with childhood (so might be cuddling with Mom and playing with dolls and still taking challenging classes or working on her photography because she wants to pursue a particular career some day). Damour helps identify how these strands are different, and so how and why we as parents and caregivers can appropriately support each in its own place. Each chapter ends with a "When to Worry" section that identifies when concerns go beyond what is typical and a family should get extra support.

She is realistic about when and where adults get to draw reasonable boundaries, and when and where teens have control over their own actions. I think I liked that best about the book. For example, identifying that adults can't actually make a teen do her homework, but can decide that a teen can't go out with friends if grades aren't high enough, because they haven't been demonstrating responsibility. However, moderating that with allowing friends to come over, because "joining a new tribe" means that social activity has a huge amount of meaning at these ages as well.

I have recommended this book to family members, neighbors, client families, and coworkers, and been putting ideas from the strands up on a whiteboard in my office. One coworker is borrowing my book right now. It's not the only thing that will get you and your girl through the teen years, but it's a fantastic place to start.
