At first, Bartholomew Cubbins had just one hat, but when the King ordered him to take it off, he found that he could not--each time there was another on his head.

Personal favorite Seuss submitted by FordAlpha on August 24, 2017, 8:03pm "The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins" is written in prose, not verse, and is fairly lengthy, so it's better for somewhat older kids who have the attention span to get through it. This was perhaps my favorite Dr. Seuss book growing up, and I still love it. My mom was a marvelous picture book reader. I was always entranced by her solemn pronunciation of "Yeoman of the Bowmen!" and the magicians' muttering spell. As an adult, I have a much greater appreciation for the irony in the story, as the king passively accepts his advisors' and even his snotty nephew's increasingly excessive suggestions, while the executioner happily finds a legal loophole to avoid chopping off a young boy's head. Dr. Seuss lets the king off easy in the end, but the bratty Grand Duke Wilfred gets his comeuppance, a firm spanking, when the king finally realizes that the young peasant who "won't take off his hat before his king" has behaved far more respectfully than the backtalking royal nephew.
So long --don't try it with a room full of preschoolers submitted by JennJenn on August 4, 2020, 10:14pm While it is a good story, don't try it with a class full of preschoolers because it will feel like you are going on forever!
