Ever since Arlena's arrival the air had been thick with sexual tension. Each of the guests had a motive to kill her, including Arlena's new husband. But Hercule Poirot suspects that this apparent crime of passion? conceals something much more evil.

Clever mystery submitted by dicencal on August 29, 2016, 11:52pm This is classic Hercule Poirot. It has all of the Christie elements: an closed off setting with a confined set of suspects, and a solution that is almost impossible to guess.

A Huge Cast of Plausible Suspects submitted by Meginator on June 16, 2023, 11:19pm This Poirot mystery ticks all the expected boxes, with its main defining feature being (to my mind) the large number of suspects who still seem completely plausible right up to the big reveal. The Jolly Roger Hotel’s guests have a fine slate of conflicting and complementary motives that Poirot slowly unravels throughout the course of the book, although its slow pace and lack of bombshell developments (until the final act) make it feel a bit languid at times when nothing seems to be moving along. Indeed, Poirot works more in the background than usual, and the third-person perspective often eliminates him entirely in ways that don’t always serve the story; for example, Christie sets up an early red herring that is so obvious that it almost detracts from the reading experience, adding little but an additional sense of potential tragedy that is neatly tied up anyway by the book’s ending. Still, even a so-so Poirot outing still makes for a decent mystery, and despite the slow pacing and emphasis on conversation over action (which isn’t unusual for these novels anyway) it reads rather quickly with an unexpected resolution that just barely stays within the bounds of credibility. This isn’t at all Christie at her finest, but it is satisfying enough for readers who want to sit back, relax, and watch the master detective use his little gray cells once more.

Another Good One submitted by kathscot on August 17, 2023, 11:36am Another good Poirot mystery where again his vacation is interrupted by murder. Lots of reasons for the victim to be murdered and several good suspects. And, of course, an unexpected solution, the only one that makes all the pieces fit. A satisfying read.
