Deck The Walls submitted by SBNB on August 25, 2017, 11:45am The text is to the tune of Deck The Halls. It was somewhat humorous and very relatable. Nice book.

More Like an Instruction Manual for Misbehavior Than a Cautionary Tale submitted by Meginator on August 1, 2022, 3:43pm The idea of this book, which twists the language of “Deck the Halls” into a far more chaotic (and, for many of us, more realistic) vision of Christmas celebrations, is quite strong, although it falters a bit on the execution. The rhythm and rhyme scheme are pitch-perfect and the book just barely tells a story, wrapping everything up neatly at the end with a familiar holiday message. However, the main point of the book is to show a group of children making a mess out of everything, usually by throwing food all over place, and the author goes out of her way to show the adults cleaning up after everyone like it isn’t a big deal. While my own household is usually far from pristine, I found the overall message a little off-putting, with the cousins never facing any consequences for egregious mess-making (that itself doesn’t seem to have a point beyond creating the funny pun in the book’s title). I’m not someone who needs all of my children’s books to feature high-falutin’ morality at every turn, but this book is strangely sanguine about bad behavior and the attempt at a heartwarming turn at the end simply didn’t work for me in light of everything that came before it.
