Interesting and Well-Researched
submitted by Sara W on June 21, 2011, 2:49am
I've been really impressed with Jon Krakauer's investigative nonfiction. He does a great job tracing a narrative thread through this book, which goes through periods of pretty dense history. The shocking story of the fundamentalist Lafferty brothers is given context with a deep study of the founding of the LDS church and the changes the religion and it's followers have undergone over the years.
Interesting, scary and well-researched and told.
Important Information submitted by jaegerla on February 20, 2012, 9:11am This is a fascinating book that everyone should read.
Sensationalistic but interesting story submitted by amanda1655 on July 20, 2014, 6:44pm This book is often panned by Mormon historians who feel that the book presents a sensationalized version of Mormon history. The book attempts to connect a murder that happened in Utah in the 1980s to the violence of 19th century Mormonism and to the beliefs of Brigham Young and other Mormon prophets. Although the connections that Krakauer makes are sometimes stretched, he presents an interesting argument about the danger of valuing personal revelation too highly.

Learned a lot, understand more US history & politics
submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on July 15, 2017, 10:04am
Framed as a dive into understanding people who take a faith to its extremes, this nonfiction book explores the outer edges of Mormonism, from the basics of its founding through the splinter groups that had, or didn't have, power through its history. It is through, engaging, well-written, well researched, and quite easy to read. I found myself reaching for it again and again. It was well balanced between global history, individuals in history, and a more modern individual story.
I don't know that this book helped me understand extremism in religions in general, other than perhaps a few generalizable ideas about people in power who protect their ideas. But I learned more than I had known about this enormous influence on American history (past and present) and about what influences current politics in Utah and throughout the West (of the United States). This has informed my understanding of Washington politics as I watch and read the daily news, so this book from 2004 has had a direct affect on my life.
