I'll take Lestat, thanks submitted by celesteh on March 23, 2010, 9:52am I've always been a great fan of this film, but it has taken me a long time to get to reading this book. The novel started slowly, and I kind of pushed my way through it because I felt I was on a mission. The downfall of this novel is Louis - our narrator, our hero. Unfortunately, Louis is a weak character and this does not help the reader to have much empathy for him. The story, however, picks up about midway through, and I enjoyed it more, all the way up until the end.

Anne Rice is not the best writer in the world by any means, but I also don't think she's quite as terrible as everyone makes her out to be (her Mayfair Witch Trilogy is a great read). Sometimes the writing seemed a little juvenile, but also, I feel like I kind of have to give her credit for somewhat pioneering this genre. Today, fiction like this is pretty mainstream, but it was not all that common at the time of this writing. So, despite its faults, there is a fantastic story here, even though Rice did not very artfully convey it.

Throughout the whole book I just kept wishing Lestat was telling a story, and not Louis. I wanted to hear more about Lestat! Looks like eventually I'll have to move on to the next book, #2 in the Vampire Chronicles - The Vampire Lestat.

Least favorite chronicle submitted by Ilyjtwya on July 19, 2012, 2:43am Honestly, this is my least favorite book of the vampire chronicles (even including the books which simply covered the characters but weren't actually listed as part of the series). I am a big fan of her work, but I would recommend beginning the story line at the Vampire Lestat.

Meh. submitted by amandasaurus on June 15, 2022, 10:53pm I loved the movie so I gave the book a shot. For a classic…eh. It’s long winded and the plot is slowwwww (not even like, old school novels slow, just slow). This is one where I’ll say the movie was better.
