"On the hundredth anniversary of the end of World War I: a hardcover edition of the classic tale of a young German soldier's harrowing experiences in the trenches, widely acclaimed as the greatest war novel of all time. When twenty-year-old Paul Baumer and his classmates enlist in the German army during World War I, they are full of youthful enthusiam. But the world of duty, culture, and progress they had been taught to believe in shatters under the first brutal bombardment in the trenches. Through the ensuing years of horror, Paul holds fast to a single vow: to fight against the principle of hate that meaninglessly pits young men of the same generation but different uniforms against one another. Erich Maria Remarque's classic novel not only portrays in vivid detail the combatants' physical and mental trauma, but dramatizes as well the tragic detachment from civilian life felt by many upon returning home. Remarque's stated intention--"to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war"--remains as powerful and relevant as ever, a century after that conflict's end"-- Provided by publisher.
"A new English translation by Brian Murdoch of the German war novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque, with an introduction by historian Norman Stone, a bibliography, and chronology"-- Provided by publisher.

Quite good submitted by Daniel Saltzman on March 15, 2010, 10:05pm Unusual in that the 1930 film of the same name is better than the inspiring book, All Quiet is a moving work that illustrates that war is not the glorious parade we think it to be.

Fantastic submitted by dahyatt on August 18, 2011, 1:15pm This book is an incredible read. You feel like you are at the front lines with the soldiers. While the 1930 movie is good, it doesn't do justice to the thoughts and fears of Paul as he tries to survive.

classic submitted by smgop on July 3, 2012, 8:09am Excellient book about WWI

A Must-Read submitted by sushai on July 19, 2019, 7:52pm The more we study about WWI, the more we can prevent this kind of war from happening again. This was an important and compelling read.

Amazing book on WWI submitted by gladaaro on July 29, 2021, 9:58pm So many people overlook WWI history, this book does a fantastic job showing the view from the ground with a critical eye to the leadership and military structure. Not only that but it is exciting and interesting to read, this new translation is incredibly well done.

All Quiet on the Western Front submitted by Jumb1e on November 1, 2022, 8:50pm I have to finally read this work, given how the 1979 TV adaptation and the 2022 German-language dramatization (both of which I appreciated), differed so much!

Great classic submitted by dave_472 on July 1, 2023, 8:49pm One of my favorite books when I was in middle.high school!
