COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Mighty Mac Arises submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2021, 10:59am Mighty Mac seems like a natural fit for this collection, being an object of immense (and deserved) local pride for Michiganders that often goes completely unrecognized by the rest of the world. But if you know, you know, you know? And you’ll know a lot more after reading this book about the bridge’s construction, released just in time for its 50th anniversary and celebrating the engineering genius and death-defying laborers who made this modern marvel rise out of the Straits of Mackinac. The captions can be a bit of a mixed bag, as Fornes veers a little too far into hero worship with his praise of main engineer/designer David B. Steinman, assumes a technical background most readers won’t have, and throws out bridge-related jargon without adequate context for the layman, but they provide a rich and detailed history of the effort to bridge this massive gap between peninsulas and demonstrate just how much (dangerous) work it was to actually will the thing into existence. Altogether, the book is fascinating and worth picking up if you’ve ever crossed the Mackinac Bridge or even gazed upon it; it’s a real testament to human ingenuity, courage, and hard work.
