Chaos Backstage at the Alphabet Show submitted by Meginator on July 13, 2019, 10:40am Though this book will be best for readers who are already pretty familiar with the usual order of the alphabet, it offers a delightfully inventive alternate take on the typical litany of letters with ample humor that works on multiple levels. The basic story is that Z is dissatisfied with always going last in the alphabet’s live show, a completely reasonable point of view; however, as the later letters begin to shake things up the situation rapidly deteriorates into barely ordered, delightful chaos. Each letter is paired with one (or more) fairly standard words (poor X) in a unique color palette as they appear onstage, and backstage asides offer the humorous meta-commentary that makes the book really stand out. A few wry comments actually made me laugh out loud, particularly an incredibly dry observation by the letter G, and a running alphabet on the bottom of each page offers an extra joke or two per page. With the huge number of alphabet books available, it’s rare to see a genuinely exciting take on the format, but I think Kontis and Kolar have managed it here; this is superb stuff. Highly, highly recommended.
