1803. The arrogant Duke of Trent intends to marry a well-bred Englishwoman. The last woman he would ever consider marrying is the adventuresome Merry Pelford -- an American heiress who has infamously jilted two fiancés. But after one provocative encounter with the captivating Merry, Trent desires her more than any woman he has ever met. He is determined to have her as his wife, no matter what it takes. And Trent is a man who always gets what he wants. The problem is, Merry is already betrothed, and the former runaway bride has vowed to make it all the way to the altar. As honor clashes with irresistible passion, Trent realizes the stakes are higher than anyone could have imagined. In his battle to save Merry and win her heart, one thing becomes clear: All is fair in love and war.

Not Memorable submitted by sdunav on June 27, 2016, 6:23pm This historical romance had some plot lines that just didn't go anywhere, and some that came out of nowhere, but the characters and the writing were good enough that I didn't care as long as I didn't think think about it too much. It's definitely not one of James' best.

A bit of a genre buster submitted by mowjac on July 16, 2018, 9:41am This was my first Eloisa James book and showcased what I now recognize as trademark pieces: an animal, literary references (usually Shakespeare but often his contemporaries), a spectacle gone wrong, a odd historical truth and of course romance. Highly descriptive intimate romance. Its an odd conglomeration of pieces and some work better than others but it does make for an interesting read, as you never know what element will pop up next.
