Book Project submitted by racoonacon1236 on June 18, 2011, 7:57pm This book feel like it was written so that someone could use it for a book project. don't get me wrong, it is one of my favorite books, but I find myself using in different ways for many book projects. It has several very clear themes. One is Calpurnia's realization that she wants to be different than what is expected of girls in that time period. She also bonds with her grandfather, which shows common ground between generations. Calpurnia is sometimes defiant, but unjustly so. She speaks her mind, especially when I comes to "No fair" and all matters of science. She is hoping to get a copy of Darwin's The Origin of Species, but instead gets The Science of Housewifery. I guess you could consider it a science book, but not the type Calpurnia was hoping for.

wonderful submitted by johnbiancke on August 17, 2015, 4:33pm What a wonderful story This book would be interesting for all young adults and adults of all ages. Calpurnia is a modern young girl living in a large family, mostly of brothers, her parents and grandfather. The relationship between Calpurnia and her grandfather is wonderful.

Girl Power submitted by Justin Shim on June 17, 2016, 12:47pm This book is great for people who enjoy people who are different than the norm. Shows how you can be different in a world that dislikes all of what you do. Good book

Well done submitted by jduffy12 on August 29, 2016, 10:54am This is a well done book

The feeling of discovery submitted by 21621032124198 on October 25, 2020, 4:01pm I loved this book! It was an interesting look at a young girl's life in the deep south in 1899. The author interwove Callie's day-to-day observations of the world around her with Darwin's theory of evolution. Funny, exciting, and highly recommended.
