JOC Still Has It submitted by sushai on August 1, 2016, 9:24am The first half of this book is Oates at her best, all the reasons I ever loved her lyrical writing as she combines the story of a present-day missing woman with the story of an Iraqi civilian girl who is raped, tortured, and murdered in a way that you, or some of the characters, can't quite tell apart. The second half of the book focuses on a character I am not that interested in getting to know better and takes the story in a direction I didn't want it to go, but I was still there for the ride and thought it was a good book overall. I think she does a tremendous job of showing the effects of war on soldiers, and of soldiers on war, and what becomes of the "hero" after he comes home in a way that is probably much more realistic than most.
