Female-Oriented Fantasy submitted by sdunav on July 23, 2016, 11:19am Some of the battle scenes had me rolling my eyes, but in general this was enjoyable fantasy with two strong female characters that are very different. Their cultural backgrounds constituted an important part of the story - though sometimes I think the different narratives made the action a little disjointed. Still, there's cool world-building, complicated characters, and an enjoyable plot. It does end with a set-up for the next volume, though.

Bechdel Test Passing in the Best Way submitted by Nay7 on August 14, 2020, 6:40pm Some of the best world building I've ever read. The author does all her research, going so far as to make sure she has the right trees written in for the right biomes. The multiple points of view really make the entire world come alive. The strength of friendship in these books makes you realize just how important family is, even if they're not blood related.
