my beloved diskworld
submitted by ferdoble on August 11, 2011, 3:47pm
To describe Terry Pratchett’s books is a difficult thing to do. The disc world series is in a word fantastic. Terry Pratchett, would seem to use the disk world, to take any theme, or know story and then twist it in his own very humorous way. These are not always laugh out loud funny (sometimes they are), bur rather the sort of funny that just sort of lifts your spirits a little bit.
I will say that in some cases there isn’t always a really strong story, sometimes its just his characters moving through one of those twisted themes. I like them all, you may want to start with the Most Von Lipwig story line (“Going Postal” and then “making money”) as at least the first one has a really great story line.
I love to pepper my reading queue with these books to keep all those books that take themselves seriously fresh and interesting.
I recommend reading them ALL.
OR listening to them. The two main narrators of Terry Pratchett’s books are Stephen Briggs & Nigel Planer and they take Terry Pratchett’s phenomenal writing to a whole new level.
Welcome to the Discworld
submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 11, 2012, 7:23pm
In his first Discworld book, Sir Terry Pratchett introduces us to Rincewind, a loveable loser who has studied magic for years but still cannot master more than one spell. He has, however, mastered the art of running away from danger, which has served him well over the years. Pratchett continues Rincewind's adventures in many other novels, including "The Light Fantastic" and "Sourcery."
Start your immersion into the Discworld (so called because the planet is actually a flat disc sitting atop four elephants who, in turn, stand on the back of a giant turtle) with this book to get the best grounding in this beloved series.
The colour of magic submitted by Julian Reinhart on June 25, 2013, 7:09pm In the very first of the Discworld series, Terry Pratchett is still getting his act together. This book follows Rincewind, a failed wizard, and Twoflower, the disc's first, and possibly last, tourist through a series of dangerous events. Of all the Discworld books, this was my least favorite. I strongly recommend reading a later book before you read this one, so you do not make assumptions about Terry Pratchett.
Such a great series submitted by Team_ROX on August 1, 2018, 6:07pm This is a wonderful introduction to one of my favorite fantasy worlds in any medium. I’ve loved all the books, once I met these characters, especially the Luggage, I was hooked!
The Color of Magic submitted by mewjael on August 16, 2019, 11:24pm I'd heard of the discworld series before, so I decided to give it a try. This first book was a great read and an exciting adventure. As soon as I picked it up I couldn't set it back down. After this one I can't wait to read some more!
The first and the worst - read the MANY MANY others submitted by AngelaA2 on August 14, 2020, 9:12pm This is Terry Pratchett's introduction to his Discworld Universe. Honestly, its the worst of the bunch and after I read this I thought, "Meh... 49 MORE of THESE??" So - I put it down and I didn't come back - and then - I watched a couple of series on Amazon Prime and I read "Good Omens" (co-authored by Sir Pratchett) and BAM I was back in love and reading ALL the Discworld Novels. Do yourself a favor and look up "Recommended Reading Order" on the interwebs - AND find the sub-plot you like. Rincewind, in this book, is not my favorite hero - I like the the Nightwatch, the Witches, Tiffany Aching, Industrial Revolution etc. Lots of great stuff - skip this book and give the others a chance. Maybe you will come back to this one later.
Not as good submitted by mssthoma on June 24, 2022, 9:18pm This was Praychett’s first disc world book and though it is wonderfully wonky his later books in the series are more fast paced and more interesting reads
Funny and entertaining submitted by mislem on July 19, 2023, 5:05pm Look at a list of "funniest comic novels." Read them. You'll find most of them aren't laugh-out-loud funny. The Discworld novels are, and this is the first, which introduces some of the major characters and sets up the world. Read this one first, then read the rest. You won't be disappointed.
The Color of Magic submitted by hrgray on August 10, 2023, 11:40pm Although the Discworld series does develop more as you move into later books, The Color of Magic is an incredible introduction to the world of the series. The characters are charming (especially the Luggage), and the writing delivers a lot of moments that really made me laugh out loud.
