Really Interesting submitted by Sonia on July 3, 2012, 12:46pm There was a lot of controversy when this book came out because Oprah endorsed it in her book club as non-fiction and later it came out that Frey had added somethings to the story to make it more interesting. Many people were mad that he had published it as non-fiction but I don't see why it should matter as long as the story is worthwhile. It is a very interesting story and I highly recommend it.

Captivating submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 27, 2014, 2:11pm So, apparently there was quite a debate (and anger) over whether this book was fiction or non-fiction, as the author changed/ added/ revamped some of his experience of this retelling of his six weeks in a last-chance rehab. He started drinking at 10, and by 23 was within weeks of killing himself with his use.

Frankly, I don't care if the facts are precisely true. Clearly the general gist of his experience *IS*, and he tells the story in a way that is as emotionally intense as anything that I have ever read. The odd writing style, nearly stream-of-consciousness, without paragraphs, quotation marks for dialogue, and using unusual capitalization, certainly played into drawing me into his headspace.

And Frey's personal journey through recovery in a way that eschewed the AA 12 steps is unusual and interesting. There are thousands of stories that tell of the successes of the 12 steps, and for vastly most addicts, they are the path (and nearly the only path) to recovery. But every so often there *are* people who find a different model that works for them. Professionals in the field really don't know what to do with them, and have sufficient experience to know that the addict's perspective almost certainly can't be trusted. So what to do with that one other person?

Frey tells an engrossing story. I was captivated.
