Awesome submitted by marielle on July 7, 2012, 9:16am Finally, a new Neal Stephenson novel doing what he does best- tech stuff. No more of that historical crap!

This is a technothriller, and while it's labeled "science fiction" I think it's a misnomer. Everything that happens in this novel could easily happen in the present day. There is a virus, an MMORPG, stolen credit card numbers- all things that exist today even if the specifics don't.

Anyway, this book is very thrilling, suspenseful, and I couldn't put it down. I hope he continues to write more books like this.

Long but good submitted by ssands on June 20, 2015, 4:30pm It's great to see Stephenson return to the action/adventure of Snow Crash and Zodiac. It includes his usual neat ideas, strong female characters, joyfully deus ex machina resolutions and unlikely romances. However, this is a very long book of over 1000 pages. The last couple hundred pages are devoted to a draw-out gun fight in a wilderness area between several roving groups of good and bad guys. I had a very hard time remembering where each group was and who was in each group. I think someone should bundle a board game with role-playing miniatures of the characters, just to keep track of this part of the book. Despite getting bogged down at the end, there were 800 pages of superb Stephenson, so it is still worth about 3 normal books!

Who is this guy? submitted by fivenson on July 6, 2019, 12:55pm I stumbled on this author & book. Was tough going for me for the 1st 100 pages or so & then whoosh.... It's been a thrill ride ever since. I'm about in the middle of a 900 or so page book & it's amazing in a way that most books aren't- if ever- until the final climax.

Giant action novel submitted by severian on July 23, 2021, 1:41pm Unlike some of Stephenson's other "Big Ideas" books, this one is pretty much a straight up 1,000 page action novel. It's super entertaining and a quick read, though, packed with lots of weird details and memorable characters.

Technically, the book takes place in the universe from his Cryptonomicon novel, but you don't need to read that to enjoy this. The next one in the series, Fall, is less action oriented but also more fascinating.
